The company was founded in 1977 and since 2004 it has been traded publicly. Its total assets as of 2017 was US$7.45 billion with revenues at US$514 million. The company has more than 300 employees.
Extra Space emerged from the old Extra Space Development Co. Its founder Kenneth Woolley and associate Richard Tanner marketed their self storage products successfully and this led to rapid growth. In 1998 the company collaborated with Spencer Kirk and established several business ventures that bolstered the company.
In 2004, Extra Space became listed in the NYSE, and the following year the company bought Storage USA. This was a major acquisition that led to 400 more properties and increased their presence in other states. The transaction was the biggest in the self storage industry during that time.
